The monsoon that wrecked my shed roof taught me a lesson
Back in 2019 I had this old shed out by the acequia near my place on the West Mesa. The roof was flat and I'd patched it twice with that tar paper and gravel stuff, figured it was fine since we don't get much rain most years. Then one July afternoon a real gully washer hit, the kind where water comes off the Sandias in sheets and the arroyo behind my property turned into a river in about 20 minutes. I was inside watching the news and heard this crunch, went out and the whole roof had buckled under the ponding water, just caved in on my lawnmower and a bunch of lumber. The fix cost me $1,100 for a new pitched roof with metal panels, and the guy who did it told me flat roofs are a trap in Albuquerque because of that sudden heavy rain. Now I walk around after every storm and check for any low spots on my house roof too, the one that has that membrane stuff. Has anyone else dealt with ponding water on a flat roof around here, and what did you end up doing about it? I'm still a bit paranoid after that one.

That "check for low spots" bit hit home for me, back in 2017 I had a tiny dip on my patio cover and a two-inch puddle turned into a sagging mess that dripped on my grill for a week before I fixed it.
