That time a plumber told me my vent pipe was fine when it clearly wasn't

I had a leak in my bathroom wall last summer and called a guy out. He looked at the vent pipe on the roof, said "looks good to me" and left after 10 minutes. A week later I tore the drywall off myself and found a crack in the pvc joint that was dumping water down the studs. He charged me $150 for that look and I still had to fix it myself. Anyone else had a pro brush off something obvious?

My neighbor's HVAC guy did the same thing with our furnace last winter. Said "she's running fine" but I found a cracked heat exchanger after it started setting off the carbon monoxide alarm. Ended up costing me $800 for a new unit and a lot of lost sleep. Makes you wonder how many other "professionals" are just eyeballing things and hoping for the best, doesn't it?

$800 for a new unit just because some guy couldn't be bothered to actually look at the heat exchanger? That's insane, man. I'd be beyond pissed if I lost sleep over something like that when it could've been caught with a basic inspection. Hope you reported that guy or something, because that's not just lazy, that's dangerous.

Funny how "she's running fine" is the universal language of "I didn't actually check anything." That's like a mechanic saying your tires are fine after just looking at the car from across the parking lot. Probably charged him for a "full inspection" too, which meant he stood there for five minutes and nodded at the furnace like it was an old friend. Glad you caught it before you ended up with a free trip to the emergency room. Sometimes I think these guys just learned the trade from watching YouTube and figured that's close enough.
