That sprinkler valve I put off fixing flooded half my lawn last Saturday

I had a leaky Hunter valve in the back for months, kept telling myself I'd get to it. Finally popped during the night a week ago after that rain we had. Water was pooling by the fence, about 3 inches deep in a 10 foot patch. Tore it out Sunday morning and replaced the whole solenoid assembly for like $15 at Lowe's, but I had to dig through clay for an hour. Anyone else deal with these old Orbit valves from the 90s that just refuse to seal?

kept telling myself I'd get to it" - yep that was me with a Rain Bird valve last spring. The nylon threads on the bonnet were stripped from the factory and it would weep no matter what I did. I ended up just replacing the whole valve body, quick fix but I should have done it months earlier. Did you check if the old solenoid was actually worn out or just caked with debris?

Tossed the old one without even testing it. Figured it was cheaper to just swap in a new one than to keep fighting with it. Sometimes you just gotta cut your losses.

Ha yeah that's always the gamble, is it actually broken or just full of gunk? I probably should've cleaned it first but I was already mad at it by that point.
