Rented a $300 tile saw instead of buying one, demolition day bit back

Set out to redo my kitchen backsplash in Nob Hill and figured renting beats owning. Three days in, the saw threw a belt mid-cut and the rental place charged me $75 for a replacement part they claimed I broke. Anyone else find renting tools for a one-off job is a gamble with hidden fees?
