PSA: That $9 tube of silicone caulk in my garage fixed a leak the plumber wanted $275 to fix
My kitchen sink was dripping into the cabinet under it for about three weeks and I figured I needed a whole new faucet or a plumber out to the house in Albuquerque. A guy at the Ace Hardware on Juan Tabo told me to check the back of the faucet first, and sure enough the caulk line behind the base had cracked and water was running down the back of the cabinet. I dried it out, ran a bead of silicone around the base, let it set for a day and it has been bone dry for two months now. Am I crazy for thinking a lot of these little leaks just need to be sealed up from the outside, or did I get lucky?
Sealing from the outside only hides the problem, it doesn't fix it, so that water is likely still getting in somewhere and just hasn't shown up yet. Two months isn't long enough to call it fixed, and a real leak behind the faucet can rot that cabinet out before you ever notice.
