Pro tip: That $35 moisture meter saved me from a $4k mold remediation

I ignored a musty smell in my laundry room for like 4 months (figured it was just abq dust or whatever). Bought a cheap pinless moisture meter on a whim after a friend nagged me about it. Poked around the drywall near the washer and got a reading of 22% where it should be like 8-10%. Turns out a pinhole leak in the supply line had been slowly soaking the wall for who knows how long. Caught it early enough that I just had to cut out a 2x2 section of drywall and replace some insulation. Total fix cost me maybe $60 in materials. Has anyone else ever caught a hidden leak with one of these things before it turned into a nightmare?

$60 fix beats the heck out of a $4000 bill, seems like a good return on investment to me.

Yo that's wild lol. It's funny how a small cheap tool can save you from a disaster like that. I feel like this whole thing is part of a bigger pattern where people ignore tiny problems until they explode into huge expensive ones. Same thing with like, weird noises in a car or a little leak under the sink. It's human nature to just hope it goes away but spending a few bucks now beats paying thousands later every single time.
