I was sure my Albuquerque neighbor was wrong about using a heat gun on old window putty, but it worked perfectly on my 1950s casement.

Seriously, a heat gun for some old putty. It's not like we're restoring a museum. A butter knife and some elbow grease gets the job done. People act like every home repair needs a pro tool. My uncle did his whole house with a five dollar scraper. Took a weekend, saved a trip to the hardware store.

Oh man, that's a solid tip. Most people grab a putty knife and start chipping, which just cracks the old wood. The heat softens everything up so it peels off in long strips, no splinters. Saves hours of cleanup.

Watch reesesullivan try to use a hair dryer on his deck and set the whole thing on fire. That heat gun trick works great until you forget it's not a toy. Some people just shouldn't be allowed near power tools.
