Why do we always jump to the big fix before trying the small one?

I spent 6 months on a woodworking bench project I couldn't finish because the drawer slides kept binding. Turns out the screws I used were 2mm too long, not a design flaw like I assumed. Anyone else ever gut a whole plan over one tiny measurement?
