The "just use a stud finder" advice that cost me a whole Saturday

My buddy Dave swore his $15 Franklin stud finder was foolproof, so I borrowed it to hang a heavy shelf in my garage. It beeped green right where I marked, so I drilled in and hit nothing but drywall, the anchor spun loose instantly. Turns out the battery was at 10% and it was reading the outlet wiring behind the wall, not an actual stud. After two more failed holes and a trip to Home Depot for a $40 magnetic one, I found the real studs in about 3 minutes. Has anyone else had a tool give them false confidence like that, or was it just my luck with Dave's junk drawer gear?
