That extra glue thing is real. My buddy's tank model glue fixed the handle on his coffee mug, same deal.

That tank model glue story is interesting, but my experience is the opposite. I had some of that cement for a plane model and tried to fix a similar coffee mug. It held for a day, then the handle just popped right off again. It seems like that stuff can be really hit or miss depending on the plastics involved.

So when drew_stone46 mentioned it being hit or miss with plastics, that got me wondering. I had a similar fail with a plastic cup, so it's not just models. What's the actual science behind why some plastics bond and others don't?
