Serious question, I was writing my novel's ending first for 2 years before it clicked
I kept starting my book by writing the last chapter, thinking it would give me a road map, and after 40k words I finally admitted it was just me avoiding the hard middle part. My friend read the first 10 pages in one sitting and said the voice was totally different from the ending I showed her. Did anyone else here figure out their real process only after trashing a stack of drafts?
Ah, see, the ending is usually what I write last on purpose. Not because I'm avoiding the middle, but because by the time I get there the characters have changed so much that the original ending doesn't fit anymore. Your friend caught it right away, the voice in chapter one and the voice in the ending were written by two different versions of you. Two years apart will do that.
