Old school mold inspection vs. the new digital meters, which side are you on?

I spent 4 months on a half-finished basement reno in Cleveland, and the mold check was the part I kept avoiding. My uncle swears by his eyes and a flashlight, says the $300 electronic meter is just a toy, but he missed a colony behind the drywall that the meter caught in 10 seconds. I got both methods working together now, but I'm curious, did anyone else find one approach way more reliable for their own project? What tipped you over?
