The 401k fee table finally made me open a solo 401k

I sat through a retirement seminar at my credit union in Des Moines last month, mostly to get the free sandwich. But they handed out a comparison sheet showing how even a 1% annual fee can eat nearly 30% of your growth over 30 years. I ran my own numbers on my small side gig income, and the difference between my company plan fees and a solo 401k was around $4,800 a year in lost earnings. That got me to actually open one through Fidelity after three evenings of paperwork. Now I'm shifting my freelance graphic design money into it before touching any taxable brokerage account. Did anyone else only realize the fee bite after seeing a table like that, and what do you use for your retirement side account?
