Almost wasted $90 on a course to teach me bookkeeping for my side gig

I was about to buy a $90 online course to learn bookkeeping for my weekend resale thing when a friend told me to just try a free spreadsheet template first. Setting up the sheet myself took about 20 minutes, not the weeks I'd built up in my head. What free tools did you try before paying for something?
